Assembly Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nellie Pou Assemblywoman Nellie Pou (D-Passaic), chairwoman of the Assembly Appropriations Committee issued a multimedia package Thursday consisting of her opening remarks from her committee's examination into the Christie administration's Race to the Top application error, which cost the state $400 million in federal education funds.

POU OPENING STATEMENT FOR 'RACE TO THE TOP' ERROR HEARING

Assembly Appropriations Chairwoman Nellie Pou Assembly Appropriations Chairwoman Nellie Pou (D-Passaic/Bergen) released the following statement Tuesday as she convened a hearing into the administration's Race to the Top error:

"Ladies and gentlemen there has been much speculation about the purpose for today's hearing. As we all know, New Jersey was not among the states chosen to receive funding from the federal Race to the Top education program because of the administration's failure to properly complete the application.

"This was a great disappointment, especially considering how the effort to receive this money was initially a cooperative bid by so many involved in education in New Jersey, ranging from the teachers to the Legislature and the state Department of Education. The result of this mistake - New Jersey lost out on $400 million when teachers are losing their jobs, property taxes are soaring and the quality of education is at risk..."

** MEDIA ADVISORY ** ASSEMBLY HEARING ON TUESDAY WILL DISSECT RACE TO THE TOP ERROR TO AVOID FUTURE MISSTEPS

Assembly Appropriations Committee Chair Nellie Pou The Assembly Appropriations Committee next week will hold the first formal legislative inquiry into the critical mistake that cost the state $400 million in federal Race to the Top funds. The hearing will take place on Tuesday, September 7, at 10 am in committee room 11 on the fourth floor of the State House Annex.

The committee expects to question key members of the Christie administration involved in the processes and procedures surrounding New Jersey's failed application for Round II of Race to the Top funding and the subsequent chain of events.
