McKeon Questions How Christie Can Support Horizon Plan Without Expert Input

Assemblyman Calls Plan "Reckless, Irresponsible and Jeopardizes the Security of the Health Insurance that Protects 3.8 Million New Jerseyans"
(TRENTON) - Assemblyman John McKeon issued on Friday the following statement:
"Last week we learned from the Banking and Insurance Commissioner that the Governor hasn't involved him nor any of the hundreds of experts at the Department in developing his legislation to fundamentally and drastically alter laws that have for decades served well the 3.8 million New Jerseyans who rely on Horizon for health insurance.

"We also learned from him that no definition exists for "excess surplus," that Horizon and other health insurers are already required to return funds to policyholders when they collect more than is legally permitted, and that he cannot explain why a tax should unfairly be imposed only on Horizon members.

"The fact that the policy experts at the department don't understand the rationale or need for this plan and had no role in creating it means this reckless proposal is based on nothing more than political expediency.

"Governor Christie's politically motivated plan is reckless, irresponsible and jeopardizes the security of the health insurance that protects 3.8 million New Jerseyans."
